RMIT does offer some financial aid for students but it is not much. It is about $500 for the first year and then $1000 each year after if you need it for something unexpected. RMIT's emergency student loans are only for local students.
But you do have to pay it back. Ie it is not free money. And you need to have paid all your University fees before you can apply.
There are few scholarships for International students at RMIT depending on the course that you are doing. You have to meet eligibility criteria though and there are cut off dates for these. There are more for local students though
Many uni provide scholarships for their students. I know that Melbourne Uni offers several for their students.
There is AUSAID for US and students from other countries but they do have some strict criteria
The banks do have some sort of financial aid but again its not much and you have to pay the loan plus the interest earned. And the bank will ask lots of questions.
So in retrospect it is probably in your best interests to organize your own finances before you leave for Melbourne.
RMIT does have a financial service so if you do get into trouble this might be of some use to you. But it is limited.
