There are a few different types of meat in Australia. They are listed below. Some of them you can find in a supermarket, others you may need to go to a deli or specialist shop.
1) Kangaroo meat- I haven't tried it, but people say that it is good. This is sold at the Queen Victoria Market
2) Salami- is a preserved meat and can be either spicy or mild. It is from Italy. It is normally sold at the delis and markets. You can add it in pasta, salad, pizza and sandwich dishes.
3) Chicken- it is sold whole or in parts at the supermarket, butchers and at the markets in Melbourne. The cost ranges from $8-$20.
4) Peking duck- it can only be bought at Chinese restaurants in Springvale, Footscray, Preston, Melbourne, Dandenong, Box hill etc. They are sold as whole or half ducks. Prices range from $20-$50.
4) Beef- You can find it for $8-$20 at supermarkets, butchers and markets. You can do anything with beef from stir fry to roasts.
5) Ham- some hams are only sold at the delis and others are sold at the supermarkets. They range from $5-$17 per pack or kg.
6) Mince- it is about $8-$12 at the butchers. It can be used to make meatballs or the average Australian spaghetti sauce.
7) Pork- it is about $10-$30 at the market, supermarkets and butchers. The price can vary per kg. You can roast it to have your average Aussie roast or you can slice and boil it. It can go with noodles or rice.
8) Game- it is very expensive. It is a type of bird, eaten as a delicacy here. I have never tried this dish before. It is only sold in selected butchers.
9) Sausages- there are different varieties from your average sausage to your spicy Hungarian/German bratwurst. They can cost from $10 a pack to around $20 per kg. They are found at the local supermarkets/butchers/markets. You can use them to do hot dogs/bangers and mash (it is a very English dish consisting of sausages and potato mash) or your typical Aussie BBQ.
10) Lamb- These can cutlets, chops, or just lamb pieces. You can ask your local butcher how to cook them and they'll be happy to assist you. They are about $8 per pack to about $25 per kg.
11) Steak- They can be fillet, eye, mignon, wagyu or normal steak. It's probably best ask your local butcher as to how to cook them. They can be from $14 per pack to about $40 a kg.
NB: if you buy closer to closing time, there are usually specials on these products and you can get them for a fraction of the cost
