Killiney Kopitiam

Killiney Kopitiam has been around for a little while, about one year. They are extremely popular with the Malaysians and the students from RMIT and Melbourne Uni. The place is just a short storll from RMIT City campus. It's located on Lygon st in Carlton.

On this very cold day in decmber I felt like some warm food to cheer me up so in I went

They were established in Malaysia in 1919 and their first store opened in Melbourne late last year.

About nine other bloggers raved on about this "Malaysian" place.
Here they have a kaya toast special with eggs, coffee and toast. I ordered this ($5.90) and nasi goreng ($6.80). they also do roti, satay and noodles along with other Malaysian drinks and sihes
Their nasi goreng was the best one that I have tried. It was authentic and I loved the salty fish.

They claimed that their kaya toast was the best and that their kaya sauce is homemade. I tried their toast and fell in love with it. Freshly done with their really sweet paste is the best.

Their eggs were a little too runny and too overcooked. That was the only grumble that I had.

but other than that everything was just perfect.

I can't wait to try the other one on Bourke st and it is recommended that you do come for cheap, warm, comforting meals.

Supper Inn by Katherine

In my 28 years of being in Melbourne I have not been to Supper Inn. Supper Inn is one of Melbourne's most famous Chinese places. I was born and bred in Melbourne.

So when Sally decided to try the place I was really keen on the idea.

But I had trouble finding the place. I guess it was my own fault for forget to print the map. It was hidden in a laneway somewhere off Lt Bourke st.

The place in itself was not near bins like someone suggested on Urbanspoon but it was small and cramped and up some stairs so people wearing heels might have some trouble with the stairs and the cobblestones outside.

It was noisy at 6:30pm when we came and it was hard to find a good table. We were place right outside the bathrooms which means I got whacked in the face a few times by the beaded entrance.

There was one table which BYO'd their own wine. You can bring your own wine.

We checked out the bathrooms and we both didn't like them. Whilst they were clean they were humid and the toilet was just basic. Nothing more. And for this sort of establishment the bathroom was small. So there might be a queue for the ladies on a busy night.

Sally asked them "Do you have dumplings?" And the waitress said "NO". And then Sally asked "What do you recommend?". To which the waitress replied with the most expensive seafood dishes.

It is $20 per head but that was easy as most dishes were over the $15 price mark. I eyed one tables Roast pork and I really wanted it. Apparently it is one of their signature dishes on the menu (or so I am told by my parents).

The roast pork ($16) for a small plate was the best dish out of all and we both enjoyed the dish. It was freshly done with the nice crunchy skin.

The fried rice though ($17.5) was a bit meh for my liking. The rice was really mushy and cold and a little bit sweet. There was no egg in it.

We also loved the combination chow mein ($17.5). We loved the crunch of the noodles. But I found the dish to be a tad bit salty and the chicken a tad bit cold. I would have loved tofu in this dish and more veggies (vegetables) in it. Sally and I both finished this dish in record time.

Oddly enough the service (like others have said) was a tad bit cold though. I had to borrow a pen to take notes and the waitress quite rudely at the end of the meal said "CAN I PLEASE HAVE MY PEN BACK????" And I'm like "No I haven't finished yet". And they also kicked us out when we wanted to linger on for a while in a rude way. They basically threw the bill down at us. Rude.

I think that they almost forgot our tea ($1 per head) but we kindly reminded her.

It's a place that you come just for special occasions and just for the food though. Would I return? Maybe, only just to have their roast pork (suckling pig) and maybe try their Congee, Chinese donuts, tofu and steamed rice as I saw other tables had this and it looked quite nice.

$2 Pizzas at Bimbo Deluxe

Bimbo Deluxe is currently rated at number 66 on Urbanspoon. Twelve other bloggers have raved on about this place for some time so I thought that I'd check it out. I'm not going to go into much details about this but I can tell you its on a tram line and that it is a pizza bar with a gaming area and two levels of seating. I was really confused about this as in some places I normally wait to be seated. I had to share a table with randoms again. Sigh.
The service was a bit slow and haphazard but other than that it wasn't too bad

When I got there at 1:30pm there was a bit of a queue and you have to order your pizza and drink at the bar. Their pizzas are normally $4 but because it is their 10th birthday it is half price.
So I had one of their vegetarian ones and a lemonade at $5.50.
It was a bit of wait for the pizza and I was starving. But my eyes did wander on to other people's pizzas and boy don't they look good.
Mine was good too, except the pizza base was really hard to cut and there wasn't as much vegetables as I'd like. But for $2 who can complain. I would have loved some rocket on this.
I would have liked to have dessert but seeing as it was so late in the day and I had other things on, I just didn't have time for it.
But I'd love to come again maybe in the evening with a big group and sample lots more.

Walkers Doughnuts by Katherine

When Sally and I parted ways after dinner I had a sudden craving for good Doughnuts. I remembered reading a review from the Eat and be merry crew about a place called "Walkers Doughnuts" which is outside Flinders st station.

Don't I love finding good things down this end of the city. It's not often that there are a lot of good as well as cheap finds in the city.

Now this place is a no frills place where the emphasis is on food. They have been around for 6-7 years but I only just discovered them this year.

They do have $1 hot jam donuts but I had a craving for their custard doughnuts. Their custard doughnuts are $3.20 but boy are these good. Nice and creamy custard- the way it should be. But they had a bit too much sugar and I got it everywhere.

Students if you are in the city and don't feel like another Krispy Kreme doughnut you can come here or Vic Market for your doughnut fix.

Oh yeah and they also do coffee. Sweet.

Druids by Katherine

Druids is a cafe in the city right outside of RMIT. I haven't had the slightest chance of going in there as it always seems way too quiet. I wonder why?
And I wonder why there is all the bad reviews on Urbanspoon?

So when my friend suggested that we go there I didn't say no.

And we went on this rainy day in Melbourne just for coffee and a muffin. I don't know the price off the top of my head because my friend paid for it but my guess was that it was under $10.

The service at the front counter seemed a little non chalant but the guy out the back seemed to be alright. He happily accomodated the International student right behind us which led me to think that they only just look after the International students and only cater for them.

We ordered a chocolate muffin, a long black and a cappucino. My friend seemed to like her cappucino, but I found my long black to be burnt and bitter. Way too bitter for my liking. We shared a muffin which my friend loved as it melts in the mouth, but I found it to be a tad dry for my liking.

I'm not sure whether I'd return. I wouldn't really return unless I'd have to sorry
