And why it is important to have a voice

Gloria Jeans in Caulfield has been underpaying its staff by about $8-$10 per hour. Many of them are International students.
Many of Melbourne's International students have been forced to work long hours for little or no pay and this Gloria Jeans is one example.
The Fair Work Ombudsman did an investigation when a student worker complained about this outlet. On April 7th there was a hearing. The owners know that they broke the law but they say that the minimum wage is too high according to the Age.
We know that business hasn't been good for the last year and they also had to pay the expensive land and loyalty fees to Sydney's head office. Its the same as Starbucks.
When it got out in the news many people were shocked to hear this. Meld was the first blogger to write about this sad story.
It isn't just the Caulfield outlet, the city outlets have similar stories of where people are underpaid. Melbourne central in particular is one culprit. Hence this is why I'm never buying coffees from there ever again. They are horribly overpriced and not even decent. I prefer my local small shops any day.
As for International students they can make a complaint to the Fair Work Ombudsman if they think that they are unfairly paid or treated by their employer. Their website is here.
Remember you do have the right to be heard.
