New International students Guide to Melbourne in 2014- First steps

Students  here are some things that you need to know. Each week we will bring you guide about settling in Melbourne. Here is the first about arriving in Melbourne.

 Clearing customs and Melbourne Airport
The first thing to do when you get off the plane is to collect your luggage and clear Customs. This is relatively easy to do provided that you have declared everything. If you don't declare everything then you could be fined about $350.

There are Labrador dogs that work with Customs to sniff out anything that is prohibited such as food, plant materials and drugs.

Make sure that you know what you have packed before you leave for Melbourne. You can find a lot of your foods in Melbourne so you don't need to pack any food. If you do pack food and Customs finds it as they always do your food may be thrown out.

Once you have cleared Customs you can leave the airport. your Uni will have organized transport already. Usually though you have to book it when you accept your offer.

DO NOT BRING DRUGS TO MELBOURNE! Many people have landed in jail because of this.

 Where to stay?
Many students would have organized accommodation before they left for Melbourne either with relatives or friends, in a homestay or in student accommodation. But for those that left it to the last minute you could stay in United Backpackers or at Discovery Melbourne as they do pretty great rates.

Your university has a housing service which is free for all students to utilize. But don't leave looking for housing until the very last minute as you might not have a place.

Food- where do I go for my first meal?
Depending on your budget and circumstances you might decide on a cheap meal or an expensive one. Just don't blow your budget on your first meal. Your first meal should be memorable.

There are lots of places in the city and you can use the Urbanspoon website to have a look for suitable restaurants within your area.

Play it safe on your first few days in Melbourne and welcome to Melbourne
