Student works for United for two years

Shiva was an Indian student who came in 2008 to study Multimedia at Cambridge.

To survive, Shiva had to work in a part time job at United. This United is in Eltham. Later he worked for the same boss at Yarraglen. Shiva like many others had an unscrupulous boss who did not care about the paying conditions. The boss is Indian and he has one son.

United is a chain of petrol stations which started in South Australia and then grew to Victoria and Queensland.

The boss was very manipulative and changed all the information that the Government required from the business to make it look like he was doing the right thing. His wife never worked at the store but he paid all the taxes for her and took out everything in his name including the house that Shiva lived in.

Shiva was, for most of the time by himself. He had to do tasks such as shelf filling, cleaning  the car wash bays etc.

Very soon after Shiva had depression. So much so that he quit his course at Cambridge. Like others he didn't know what his rights were and what the law was. He didn't know about talking to his employer, a Mr Gopi about his payment and treatment, nor did he contact the Head Office.

He did not tell his parents that he was depressed as his mother had ill health.

His sleep was so disrupted due to his working hours at United that he was forced to quit uni.

He was asked to do some unpaid hours and he was paid cash in hand. The owner in place of his wages had given him a place to stay nearby and had deducted the rent and bills from his wages. Shiva had paid $350 per month for rent. Shiva earned about $200-$300 per week. Because United operates from 6am-10pm at night and there is no transportation at that time, the employees would live nearby. Shiva doesn't drive but he walked home.

From time to time the employees would eat something from the store and the owner would deduct them off their wages.  Every mistake they made he would deduct it from their wages. International students earnt $10 an hour for which they had to pay tax, whilst the Australian workers got $13 an hour with their tax already paid. There was one Indian girl working there

In 2012 Immigration asked him to leave because he had outstayed his visa. He told Immigration about the fact that he was depressed and had lack of English and understanding.

" This Kind of Citizens who are running businesses in Melbourne, they are making to break all the rules for their personal benefit by playing with life of students in Melbourne. In one way or the another he encouraged me in getting fake work experience certificate .By not paying proper tax to the government while working Even If the students get Fake work experience certificate unlawful fully also they eligible for Permanent Residency." said Shiva

Shiva doesn't want anyone else to make the same mistake. In fact he wants everyone to know about United. You can sign Shiva's petition here.
