RMIT and other universities always talk about LinkedIn as a job networking site and how it is so popular. Here we talk about LinkedIn. Did you know that about 89% of companies use LinkedIn to find people?
What is it?
Its a social networking site. But more of in a professional way. This is where some jobs are advertised. This is one great way to market yourself to potential employers. More than 200mil people use it around the world.
How to sign up for this service?
It is free and all you need to do is to head to this site.
What does it offer and how can I benefit?
Here this site has many job ads in which people can apply for them. It also offers the chance to network with others.
Here you can choose your networks based on the courses or careers that you are in.
How do I use it?
It is like Facebook but in a much more professional way. First of all like Facebook you need to have a profile. If your profile is incomplete there will be blue bits reminding you as to which parts to fill in.
NB: your profile has to be up to date.
In LinkedIn there is a section where you can talk about your education and what you studied. You can also put in some of your work experiences as well. Employers will want someone who has experience. You also need to brush up on your skills from time to time.
In the recommendations part you can ask other people to nominate you for something. It is like your referees section of a resume. Don't be afraid to ask your lecturer for these if you have a great relationship with them.
You can connect with people. To do that you need to put in a request. It is always nice to put in a note so that people remember you.
There are industry relevant groups which you can follow so that you can keep up to date with what is going on in the industry.
Some hints:
Make sure that your LinkedIn profile is professional.
Having about 100 or more more connections is always a good thing.
Also make sure that you have some endorsements (recommendations)
Do have a summary which says a bit about you. Recruiters may not want to scroll down the page for your experiences.
Good luck with LinkedIn. We are still learning about this software so do give us some feedback about this. Do leave us a comment.
