It gets students; especially International students who find that this practice is discriminatory and needs to stop.
Many international students feel that they can't participate in their community activities as well as feeling unsafe especially at night. Students at night sometimes walk home in the dark because they can't afford the expensive fees. Some students have been bashed late at night. Others have been robbed.
Lin a International student in Melbourne finds it difficult to pay her monthly of $186. She live in Werribee and studies in RMIT. Her rent is about $110 per week but she still needs to be able to pay her bills, food and tuition on time. She works for Glad Cleaning company who asked her for an ABN so that they can get away with paying cash in hand wages which is illegal.
Another student from China worked in Starbucks in Glenferrie and lives in Lilydale. He too cannot afford the expensive travel fees to and from uni.
Many locals think that International students don't pay tax which is not true. They all pay tax just like the Australian residents.
There is a petition online and I encourage you sign this to stop this discriminatory behavior. The City of Melbourne is also supporting this campaign and will lobby for this change.
