There are three different groups of people that help to run the University. It would be a great idea to know them as they can help you should you be in trouble. Katherine explains the system as she knows it.
1) Administrators- they deal with the day to day operations of the University. They can be property services, receptionist, academic services, registrar, managers etc. They also decide on the policies and the rules for everyone to follow. It is very rare that you would meet these groups of people face to face but you might see them just walking around.
They also manage the student database. Without them you would not exist.
2) Academics- some of them do research for the university and others teach you the stuff that you need to know. Some of them are students just like you are earning a living for their postgraduate degrees so they might be in the same boat as you. You should really get to know your lecturers and your tutors really well as they can tell you whats on the exam and more importantly give some feedback on your assignments. If you know your teaching staff really well and get on with them they can also give you some suggestions to how to deal with your problems.
3) You, the students of course- without your say and money the university cannot run. That is why there is a Student Union in every university and that is why it is important to vote during the Student Union elections. In each student union there are union reps who can speak on behalf of students each year. Each year there are always new representatives. It is also important to do those student surveys as they will give the University some feedback good or bad.
